TAP The Tranquille Project Arnica Artist Run Centre 2007
Artist Statement By Kelly C Perry From the beginning of this project I was so excited to know more about Tranquille, looking at the overall view made me realize again it was a metaphor of myself, a direction I have so often taken as an artist. The more I searched and spent time on the location the more I wanted to know about how it all happened and to who. Leaving me to search for a beginning and possibly the end of another beginning. Tranquille has gone through many changes and with each change could their possibly be a better and more fulfilling direction. Over the months I covered miles by foot and by car, snapping pictures, reading books, talking to people. My brain became overloaded and today I sat here reminiscing as I go through the heaps of papers, almost losing myself, not unlike my personal life at times. For hours I drew with pastels then transferred the art and pictures onto old bed sheets, found at the thrift shop. I found the project so intriguing I couldn’t stop, how far does one go? Maybe this leads me to the beginning and beyond dreams of men. I began to see Tranquille as being in a derelict state and wanted to explore it all. Why did theses people love Tranquille so much? What was so special about this place, many called home? You need only walk the grounds and look beyond and you may possibly understand why. Standing there quietly the sounds of the birds, the tree rustling and even a beautiful deer in front of me as I snap another picture, maybe I now understand the dream. Many lives have seen this land were natives roamed, miners in search of gold, the creation of lumber and flour at the mills and later many patients, all-striving to survive. Each era brought new hurdles to leap. People have come and gone, some losing everything, somewhat a reflection of days gone by, but somehow things change and we move forward. Pretty soon Tranquille will be only a memory, forgotten by some as we begin to watch the tearing of old and creating a dream. Maybe like a man not so long ago, maybe he will be watching from above as his dream beginnings to take shape. Note use cursor on photo for more info
438 inches of Tranquille History carefully place on panels 12"x18" pieces of white sheets sewn together. Many stories written by the people in their own handwritting, plus photographs place on each panel created on my printer. Paintings I created then printed on the bedsheets as well. The project took several months to complete and much talking to people who worked there
Arnica Artist Run Centre Acquired a grant which allowed us to spend several days out at Tranquille and document the history of Tranquille. My piece was tracing history since the First nations had their winter homes in the area to about 2007.
People who had worked at Tranquille either during the TB San years or When home for the Mentally Challenged This was at a Montlhy Luncheon
